1867 design engraved & perforated forgeries by Oneglia in approximately issued colours of 2c in rose (as 1883 issue), 6c and 8c, unused but 8c defective at top but is accompanied with a ‘used’ example. These engraved forgeries were printed and perforated individually and are therefore the scarcest of the forgeries of Straits. Printed on soft paper they often have defects or defective perfs so reasonably good examples are even scarcer. Sometimes attributed to Angelo Panelli because he bought and traded in Erasmo Oneglia’s stock after his death. See also the following three lots. |

The orange and bright magenta (not to be confused with the issued magenta overprint) overprints are now considered to be trials using the plate sent to K.L. to overprint the large stocks of stamps supplied preoccupation. They naturally have the brown gum typically found on pre-occupation issues surcharges during the B.M.A. period. The block in the Rob Holley collection sold for £2,200, a used copy £1,700.
