Awards and Medals

Congratulations to Michael Waugh, FRPSL. He has been awarded the ABPS Award of Merit for his services to philately.

Congratulations to Susan McEwen on her election as a Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society London.

Congratulations to Len Stanway for the award of a Vermeil Medal at Singapore 2015 for “Singapore Post Offices and Registration Labels 3rd Edition 2014” which is published by the Malaya Study Group.

 

Stephen J Schumann, the MSG National Representative in the USA, has been elected to become an RDP. Congratulations Steve.

This award means he joins the select list of senior philatelists and philatelic workers who have been invited to sign the ‘Roll of Distinguished Philatelists’.

The award is for his work as a National and International Judge, for Chairing the FIP Commission on Postal Stationery, work on the organisation of Philatelic Exhibitions, and work for many other philatelic societies and events.

We are delighted to report that our member, Hugh Jefferies, Editor of Gibbons Stamp Monthly and the vast range of Gibbons Stamp Catalogues, has been awarded an MBE for Services to Philately.

The official wording is “Anthony Hugh Mostyn Jefferies. Editor Gibbons Stamp Monthly and Stamp Catalogues. For services to Philately. (Bournemouth, Dorset)”

Francis Podger an active member of the MSG has been awarded the Tapling Medal for the best paper in “The London Philatelist” for his article “Singapore: The use and Development of Revenue Impressed stamps.”

The Crawford Medal, instituted in 1920, is awarded by the Royal Philatelic Society London for the most valuable and original contribution to the study and knowledge of philately published in book form during the relevant period.

It has been awarded for 2012 to David Tett for his books “A Postal History of the Prisoners of War and Civilian Internees in East Asia During the Second World War Volumes 1 – 6.

The Lee Medal is awarded by the Royal Philatelic Society London for the best paper read before the Society, supported by a display at an ordinary meeting dealing with any aspect of philately.

It was awarded for 2012 to David Tett for his paper “War Prisoners Mail in East Asia, in the Second World War” read before the Society on 24th February 2011.

David Tett has now published all 6 Gold Medal winning volumes of his epic work on Far Eastern Prisoners of War. He is now selling his very large comprehensive Research Library. Many of these books are about Malaya, Singapore, and the area so MSG members may like the opportunity of buy them. The list of these is available as a 73 page Pdf Research Catalogue from his website. NAPEX is the National Philatelic Exhibitions, held annually in USA. The MSG entered in 2 categories and was awarded a Vermeil Medal for Malaya Postal Stationery, 1937 to 1947 in the Literature category, and a Silver Medal for The Malayan Philatelist Volume 51 in the Periodicals category.

Jeff Newman has sent us an account of the MSG Meeting at the Sydney 2011 Expo, with the excellent award results for which we warmly congratulate our members.

Paul Barsdell’s exhibit of Benin/Dahomey for which he gained a gold medal.

Patrick Longfield exhibited North Borneo and was awarded a vermeil.

Glen exhibited British New Guinea & Papua Lakatois and received a large vermeil.

Boon Swee exhibited his gold medal collection of Malayan Airmails in the Championship Class.

‘Sarawak’s Three Rajahs’ by Phil Platt of NZ gained a large silver.
